Major (Ret) James Howard Strickland, of Georgetown, passed away on August 18, 2019.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Dan Bonner officiating.
Henry Page and Leila Katherine "Kat" (Finlayson) Strickland, James' parents, welcomed him into their family on the day after Christmas in 1934 in Anniston, Alabama.
After high school, James joined the Air Force and then the Army. He did two tours in Viet Nam with the Armored Cavalry. Jim retired from the Army in May 1981. He earned his BA Degree from the University of Nebraska, through the Boot Strap Program.
From 1983-2006, Jim and Marilyn owned and operated Custom Crafts Awards and Gifts in Copperas Cove, Texas. They retired after 23 years of self-employment in 2006.
They began their married life in Copperas Cove, Texas after their wedding in Ardmore, Oklahoma on October 1, 1982. They moved to Lampasas, Texas in 1995 and both retired full time after the sale of their business. Jim spent most of his time playing golf, raising a few chickens and goats until their move to Sun City in 2013. Jim and Marilyn worship at Wellspring Methodist Church in Georgetown.
In the last 18 months, Jim spent a lot of time circular knitting hats for the needy. To date, he had knitted over 160 hats!
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Page and Katherine Strickland; sisters, Elizabeth (Bettie) Olvey and Mary Leila Hill; brother, Henry Page Strickland, Jr.
Survivors include: wife, Marilyn Strickland of Georgetown; sons, James H. (Michelle) Strickland, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Michael D. Strickland of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughters, Robin E. (John) Messec of Seattle, Washington, and Sheri L. (Greg) Stephens of Temple, Texas; grandchildren: Kira and James H Strickland III and Sadie and Abie Stephens; great grandson, Conrad Powell.
