Funeral Services for Ronald L. Knoell, Sr. will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Murray Jones officiating. Interment will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at rural Maxwell, Nebraska, with Military Honors provided by the North Platte Honor Guard.
Ronald Lee Knoell, Sr., 72 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Amara Hospice in Edinburg, Texas. Ron was born July 3, 1944 in O’Neill, Nebraska, the eldest of three children born to Thomas J. and Lois Irene (Eppenbach) Knoell. He graduated from the O’Neill High School with the class of 1962 and then later in life, pursued higher education receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in 1992.
Ron was then employed as a pasteurizer for Harding Cream Company in O’Neill until he was inducted into the United States Army on August 27, 1961 where he served as a Heavy Weapons Infantryman. He was honorably discharged from the Army on March 4, 1964. Then, on March 5, 1964, Ron enlisted in the United States Navy at Seattle, Washington. His assignment was aboard the USS Tolovana. He was honorably discharged on February 12, 1968, receiving the National Defense Medal, Republic of Vietnam Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After his military service, Ron moved to Holdrege, where he was the owner/operator of R N N Trucking, contracted through Crete Carriers.
On April 27, 1963, he was united in marriage to Neta M. Conard at the Christian Church in O’Neill and to this union five children were born: Billye Jo, Ronald Jr., Mike, Jenny and Daniel.
Ron enjoyed fishing, collecting memorabilia including that of John Wayne and the Navy.
He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion, serving as a past commander.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ron leaves to celebrate his life; his wife, Neta Knoell of Holdrege; his five children: Billye Jo Bignell of Fremont, Nebraska, Ronald Knoell, Jr. and his wife, Jeanie of Salem, Wisconsin, Michael Knoell and his wife, Amanda of North Carolina, Jenny Bailey of Holdrege, Daniel Knoell and his wife, Jessica of Holdrege; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; one brother, Tom Knoell of Norfolk, Nebraska and one sister, Betty Bollwitt of Norfolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Ron’s honor and kindly suggested to Martin-Horn American Legion #66 of Holdrege or the VFW.
